My neighbour had a bonfire that got out of control, I put it out and they’re going to sue me for the fire damage.

Afternoon all.

I was sitting in my back garden enjoying the sun, and my neighbours were having a bonfire. All of a sudden, I hear screaming and call the fire brigade! I obviously look over the fence and see a fire spreading to the fence and surrounding trees. They’ve poured petrol on it and thrown the petrol up the fence or something.

I’m a firefighter, so I told them to open their gate. I went over and used their hose reel to put the fire out. They were grateful and I went about my day. There was a decent amount of fire damage to the fence, grass and the trees.

Today they sent me a letter saying they have intent to sue me in small claims for the price of the fence. Their reasoning is that because their friend is a firefighter in a different country, and he’s told them if they called the fire brigade instead they wouldn’t been able to use the high pressure hose reel that puts out more water and the fire wouldn’t have spreaded so far.

This is true, but it would’ve taken at least 4-5 minutes for the fire brigade to turn up, with a further 2 minutes at least to get the water on.

What should I do? I’ve not replied or even spoke to them.

UK is the location.
