[NC & NJ] It appears me and my girlfriend have been caught in an adoption scam. How should we proceed?

My girlfriend (soon to be wife) and a friend of hers have an agreement to adopt her baby boy upon birth. This has been set for several months and lawyers are involved. They opted to do this without an agency to keep cost lower.

Earlier tonight, we were browsing the mother’s Instagram and came across some of her old ultrasounds (she is a mother of 2). Something didn’t look right so we compared the ultrasounds that the mother sent my girlfriend. Lo and behold, some of the ultrasounds that we were sent claiming to be of the baby boy due this year were of her first child from 2 years ago. As you can imagine, this is extremely perplexing. It seems that we have been lied to about the entire situation. This is very circumstantial at best, I understand, but that is all it has taken for us to view this as a scam.

The mom and “child” are in New Jersey and we live in North Carolina. My girlfriend and the mother knew each other well before my girlfriend moved to NC. We were planning on either meeting with the lawyer in the morning, or going to see the mother in person to see what exactly is going and why we were lied to. What should we do?

If more information is needed, please ask and I will provide it as soon as I can. Thank you.
