Rented a house in expensive area because they were zoned for the better school. Now being told my child will be wait listed

Title pretty much says it all. We live in California and rented a house at a higher cost for the public school. When I went to enroll my child I was told I can only do it on a specific day and she would be waitlisted and could possibly be sent to a different school.

Is it legal for the school to not accept a child in the home area for that school. If it isn’t than what kind of lawyer do I need to hire to ensure my child gets into her homeschool.
