[Update] I am wedding vendor and a venue is charging me a fee to be at a wedding I was hired for because I am not on some list of theirs.

Original post here

I wanted to thank everyone who gave me advice, I really appreciate it! This isn't a very exciting update, but just wanted to post for those who may have been interested in the outcome.

I reached back out to the venue and asked them if the couple was aware of this fee before signing their contract with the venue, because this was the first I was hearing of it. I mentioned that I had no contractual obligation with them (the venue) for any extra fees and that either they, or myself, would need to let the couple know they are the ones responsible for this fee since they were the ones who agreed to it in the contract (if they were made aware of it). I asked them how they would like to proceed. I received a quick response saying that it wouldn't be necessary to contact the couple about this, that they would wave the fee this one time. It seems like this is a very shady shakedown of other vendors that is technically legal, but puts the couple in a very awkward place if the vendor refuses. Either the couple must pay, or the vendor cancels on them last minute. The response I received leads me to believe that they are just hoping for vendors to be scared into paying the fee, for fear of not being allowed on the venue premises the day of the wedding. But once it's brought up to involve the couple they will "wave" the fee.

As a follow up, I would like to send this venue a letter to explain how this practice is bringing the wedding industry in our area down. It is hard enough to make it in the wedding industry and charging these kinds of fees puts other vendors and couples in an awkward position and it doesn't look good for anyone. If anyone wants to DM some advice on what I should write that would be awesome! Thanks again for everyone's advice with this!
