A month or two ago, $380 went missing from my room. My new roommates are a young couple that like to get in screaming matches, so I was immediately suspicious, but hoped I'd just moved it to a different hiding place and forgotten or something. Regardless, I planted a bait $20 in the same spot the $380 went missing a couple weeks later to see. Sure enough, in one week the $20 was gone. Turned my computer into a motion cam, and within a couple days had footage of the screen going black for a few seconds, then a tall lanky figure dipping out of the image really quick (hand over the webcam, this clearly isn't his first rodeo.) But apparently he does not recognize a game camera, because I set one up immediately after that, and today after work have shots of him walking into my room looking at the area by my desk where I was stashing cash, walking out of the room, peaking back in five minutes later. His face is clear in the images. It's clear that it's my room. You can't see him taking anything necessarily, but you can easily infer.
So my question is: am I going to be able to have any justice served by reporting this to the police? I'm sure it's kind of small beans for them, since it's only $400. But I'm fucking pissed, I'm being violated by this piece of shit that pretends to be friendly when we talk. I am of course tempted to exact some sort of subtle revenge - nothing too sinister or violent, more like texting the images to his place of employment or something like that. But I'd also like to be above board if it seems worth it. Anyone have an idea what course of action may play out if I file a police report?
****A little update over my train of thought about this thing: I've never really wanted to inflict harm upon anyone, except the dude that fucked my first love while we were on a week break. That said, I keep going over this, and want to turn it into something positive. I don't think this kid is some sort of shitty sociopath criminal, I think he came from a shady place and is accordingly acting shady. I wonder if I sat him down and said "hey man; I know you been fucking me. I know you been taking shit from me. But I'm gonna give you an escape route. You prove to me with signatures that you've contributed a month of volunteer work to a local animal shelter / homeless shelter, then I won't press charges." Does that sound idealistic of me? I really do like the idea of confrontation mixed with positivity.
