Both of my parents have died in the past 3 weeks. They had been living in Arizona for the past 3 years after emigrating from Ireland.
I am flying back over there this Friday to sort out everything with the house they were renting and when I emailed their landlord about meeting him to get the key he said that their lease isn't up until December and he needs it to be paid out.
Their rent is $1,200/month so he is looking for $9,600 as they already paid for this month. I guess they have technically broken their lease, but that seems excessive. I plan on only being there for 1 week to get everything out of the house. It's in a nice area and is a nice house so he shouldn't have any problems finding new tenants.
I don't think he should lose money because of my parents' deaths but he also shouldn't profit from it which he would if he's paid $9,600 and is able to rent out within a month.
Does he have legal grounds to make me pay out the remainder of their lease?
TLDR; Parents' landlord wants me to pay out the remainder of their lease after their deaths.
