This all began last year in October when my wife and I wanted to send a couple of things (Canada goose jackets) to some relatives in China. Prior to this, we've always used this personal delivery service to send out smaller gifts (perfumes, lipsticks, etc) outside of Canada, so we thought that this time would be no different. Boxed the gifts up, paid the delivery fee, signed and received a receipt, and went on our merry way.
Come November, we asked said relatives about the status of their gifts only to find out absolutely nothing. Confused, we contacted the delivery service wondering what was going on. According to them, there was a delay at customs and everything was being held. Apparently, high end items were and still are being held for whatever reason. We couldn't really get a clear answer but were told to just wait another month, though it sounded like complete bullshit to us. Regardless, we had no choice but to do as told and hope everything would be resolved in due time.
Obviously nothing was resolved or else I wouldn't be posting this. Every month we kept on contacting them, and every time we were given the same runaround. Only today was a bit different. This time, the delivery service heavily implied that our gifts were "lost", and that they could either reimburse us with an impressive $400 total, or we could continue waiting. This did not make us happy or satisfied to say the least.
Now since these were gifts, I could just cut my losses and take the $400, but at this point this isn't about the money anymore. Half a year of being played like a fiddle, only to be told this kind of shit from a decently reputable company really pissed us off, my wife especially. Right now my wife wants to strangle every employee there, or at least shout at them for hours at end, as well as calling the police and the media on them. And as hilarious as that sounds, I rather explore my legal options instead.
So that's pretty much it. Would it be worthwhile to take them to civil court? Talk to a lawyer and sue them? Considering the gifts were only $2,000, I assume both options would not be worth it at all. Not to mention we're not exactly swimming in money at the moment. Is there anything that we can do in this situation without my wife becoming a wanted criminal?
By the way, if it makes any difference, the company in question is strictly Chinese speaking only, I myself don't speak a lick of it, while my wife does. So all this information is pretty much what I remember off the top of my head from what my wife told me at the time.
