My Ex died yesterday in CT, we have 15 year old son.

Hello LA...if there is a more appropriate sub, please direct me.

Locations: Ex lives in Connecticut, we live in Ohio.

As the title states, my ex-huband didnt wake up yesterday morning. I got the call from his sister mid morning and my current husband & I sat the 15 year old down and told him.

Here's where I need advice as I am not sure how to move forward with some things -

  1. Ex moved back to Connecticut some 3 years ago when he qualified for SSDI due to his age & disability from a car accident. He did most of the leg-work (so to speak) to get our son on dependent SSDI ( I did have to go to a local SSA office here in OH to show original birth cert for son and my identification, plus give direct deposit info) and I get a monthly check on the 15 year old's behalf. I know I will need to contact social security and the benefit will switch over to a dependent death benefit now. How soon should I contact them? Immediately? Or wait until I have a death cert? How do I obtain one across states? How quickly should I apply for the one-time 255 buck death benefit?
  2. Because we are divorced, I also collect an amount of child support based off the amount of the Ex's disability check. I do not want to owe anything back to the child support agency as the total amount of this money has been invested for the kid since I started collecting it (to help pay for college or down payment on a house one day, etc). Same questions...how soon do I need to contact child support to advise? Do I need a death cert for this?

Ex died intestate without a Will. He lived with his oldest son and there is no "inheritance" to speak of except for the Ex's personal belongings which 15 year old son says there is nothing he would want. He has some personal items that were given to him before the Ex moved to CT and 15 year old son is fine with these few things. Honestly, the oldest son the Ex resided with in CT has no money. And the oldest daughter who lives in CT has no money either. Can my 15 year old somehow end up being responsible for the Ex's burial?

What else do I need to think about or do that I'm not thinking about at this moment?

Thanks!
