The university I attend has required meal plans - each coming with various amounts of cash on a student card. The card can only be used at various cafes and places on campus. Tax gets paid on the card cash at the time that the cash is put on the card, usually at the beginning of the year for the meal plans. This means that any time money is spent at the various locations, if they tax you for your purchase, you get a tax refund into your account. The issue here is that there seems to be a glitch in the system for one of the particular locations. Any time I spend money there, instead of receiving the couple of cents worth of tax back into my account, I receive the entire purchase amount titled as "TAX REFUND". Essentially this has created a form of unlimited currency as far as my account goes, as I regularly spend money and always get the money back as a tax refund. My balance has not gone down in three months.
My big question here: Am I liable for any of the "unlimited" money on my account, particularly any money over what my original balance would have been. In the case that the university were to find out and charge me for any money over my balance, are they legally allowed to do so if it was a glitch in their system causing it? On top of that, am I legally obligated to inform the university of the glitch?
Edit: Location is Canada
