Both parents have cancer now—what happens to my disabled sister? PA

My dad was diagnosed in January with CLL (leukemia) and he’s been going through chemo. It’s been having ups and downs. We’ve almost lost him many times due to infections or complications. He can barely walk and just had 6 pints of blood given to him in the last 10 days.

Yesterday, I took my mom into the ER because her breast looked deformed and infected. I had no clue as she never told me until it got this bad and she was acting incoherent, it was bleeding, and she was in pain. I never knew as I don’t look at my moms breast. She hid it since my dad had cancer and she was afraid she might have it...They haven’t discussed all the options with us yet, but it’s going to be a long road.

I have a younger brother and sister. My younger sister (14) is severely disabled and unable to care for herself—she requires 24/7 care. My mom was her sole caretaker. I have a younger brother (19) who is caring for her now while I’m with my mom but he’s still in high school since he has a learning disability so it’s hard. I’m the only one who drives and is an established adult. I am 23, working, and married, but I’m just getting started in life. My parents have no savings—used it all when my dad had to leave work—and are living off their tax return right now to afford bills. They’re on Medicaid and welfare but it doesn’t pay their bills sufficiently. They are trying to get SSI for my dad—already have it for my sister, but what they have now isn’t enough.

I don’t even know how my parents can care for my sister at this point and my brother can’t really either. I would have to quit my job to help and care for her. I am not sure what to do, I’m so heartbroken distraught and unsure how this process will go. What happens to her if my mom and dad are unable to care for her? Can anyone offer any advice or help?

  1. Thank you for sharing this story. Creating awareness about cancer is essential, I really appreciate this. As a healthcare consultant providing Cancer Patient Advocate Training in North Carolina, I am glad to come across this blog. Great blog.
