My partner witnessed his best friend die in the mosque shootings that happened last month and was about as shaken up as you’d expect by it. The store he works in was closed for a day, then reopened. My partner requested bereavement leave the day after the shootings and was denied, as the relationship apparently wasn’t close enough to warrant leave. He also had no sick days (having used them up in January recovering from pneumonia) and was refused sick leave in advance. He’s had a good track record in all the jobs he’s worked and very rarely takes time off, works his ass off etc. After the terrorist attack he was barely functioning, sleeping maybe an hour or two a night and having panic attacks frequently. He phoned his manager again the morning before they reopened to ask them for even a couple days off, and they refused. He was very upset and told them not to expect him at work for a few days, and hung up.
My partner was off for three days, during which his employers didn’t try to contact him at all, and then on the fourth day received an email saying his employment was terminated and that he needed to return his uniform immediately. He’s agreed to start therapy, and I’m happy to support him until he’s ready to start looking for a new job, but his (now ex-)employer has ignored his phone calls and emails asking about the pay he’s owed. He was paid monthly but didn’t receive his wages for March (two weeks of full-time work).
What is my partner entitled to here in terms of unpaid wages, and what can we do if his manager continues to ignore emails and calls?
